Through the smoke and haze enter a world of magical things, where the line between an illusion and reality is slightly blurred. Gravity is defied and strength prevails. Prepare for a night of slick circus, mystery and film noir style glamour at Flipside Circus on April 27.

Flipside Circus presents Carnivale Noir, a journey into the fantastic, and the famed company’s official fundraiser event for 2013, where past and present alumni will come together to showcase their incredible talent to the city that supports them on their journey to the big, bright stage of the Australian performance arts industry. Brisbane’s premiere circus and performance company, Flipside has been a pillar for excellence, creativity and fun, nurturing artistic aspirations and physical prowess in the Brisbane community since 1998. It’s a performance arts crèche, famed nationally and internationally.

“Carnivale Noir on April 27 is Flipside’s shout-out to Brisbane – it’s an event we welcome corporates to attend as it will certainly reframe their definition of corporate event possibilities!!” said Flipside’s Deb Wilks. “We also encourage people from non-performance backgrounds to buy a ticket, because this will be a night of magic!”

Flipside Circus has been the crèche for students like Hannah Cryle, Ted Hully, Emma Shepherd, Gerramy Marsden, Jaimi Lurhmann, Riley Connolly and Sarah Irvine who have all gone on to study at the prestigious National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), while Harley McLeish (who also attended Montreal Circus School), Ellen Grow and Latonya Wigginton have studied with the Beijing Circus School.

“We are thrilled that Ellen Grow will be returning to perform in Carnivale Noir – in fact she is the amazing performer in the tissu image we have chosen to represent the event,” said Flipside’s Deb Wilks.

Carnivale Noir will be catered by Street Food Australia, an exciting new catering and social enterprise dedicated to creating amazing street food in Australia’s urban places. The team power all cooking using European cargo bikes to produce their menu of unique steamed dumplings and BBQ ribs and more. They will be incorporated into the performances, creating an amazing dining experience for guests!

Ticketing for the event is also part of the performance, with guests able to purchase tickets to sit in the middle of performance spaces. The Table of Strangers has just 20 seats and may or may not be used as a stage by performers during the night!! Micnic Tickets (aka a gourmet picnic area on the Flipside mats!) includes a Personal Butler who will feed you from the Speakeasy Swing while you lay amongst rugs and cushions with the best view in the house! The Little Big Top is perhaps the most unique and interactive entertainment experience in the Carnivale. Guests in this area will watch in amazement as their very own Little Big Top is lowered to cover their table, then lifted to reveal entertainment! Speakeasy Swing tickets ensure prime position in in the private area of the Speakeasy Swing Bar, up close and personal to the smooth sounds of the Browning Street Studios (see below for the full list of bookable sections).

“There are limited tickets only across this range of incredible performance-integrated audience involvement, a totally new idea for really allowing the public to be part of Flipside’s show,” said Deb.

“Flipside Circus is also the first stop when the biggest names in international performance come to Brisbane – names like Cirque du Soleil, Cavalia, Cantina, Briefs, Casus and Tom Tom Crew all look to Flipside for rehearsal space, support and partnerships when they tour.”

Flipside delivers circus workshops to marginalised young people in local schools and communities, using the art form as a different approach to learning. Workshops go beyond circus skills to stimulate interest in reading, help open minds to culture and create a connection with society for young people trying to find their place. All funds raised from Carnivale Noir will go towards empowering disadvantaged children to express themselves and be heard in their communities.
