The newly established Queensland Literary Awards (QLA) will announce the official winners in 15 categories from 68 finalists and more than 600 entries this evening at the State Library.

THE cash-strapped Newman Government gave $200,000 to the production company behind Big Brother to ensure the TV reality show returned to the Gold Coast, three months after scrapping the Queensland Literary Awards.

QLD co-founder Dr Stuart Glover said, “Interest in the awards is at an all time high. Our new awards have been greeted with excitement by the state’s and nation’s writers. These are among the biggest suite of awards in the country—entirely run by volunteers with support from individual and corporate donors. The Queensland Literary Awards are, if I say so myself, now very cool awards to win. The quality of the entries has been great, with both many new and many critically acclaimed writers represented.”

An additional category this year is the inaugural The Courier-Mail People’s Choice Queensland Book of the Year, enabling the community to engage with the Literary Awards by voting for their favourite book from six selected by QLA judges. The shortlist includes The Ottoman Motel by Christopher Currie,Closer to Stone by Simon Cleary, The Fix by Nick Earls, The Promise of Iceland by Kari Gislason,Riding the Trains in Japan by Patrick Holland, and Worse Things Happen at Sea by William McInnes and Sarah Watt.
